Electric Bridge Operator

About the role

The Electric Bridge Operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining an electrically controlled swing or draw bridge. Working under supervision, you will ensure smooth bridge openings for marine traffic while keeping highway traffic safe.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain the electric mechanism of a swing or draw bridge.
• Maintain a log of bridge openings, vessel movements, accidents, equipment malfunctions and unusual occurrences.
• Test and verify that all bells, lights and warning signals are functional at the start of each shift.
• Ensure highway traffic is stopped before opening the bridge and record vessel details in the logbook.
• Complete bridge accident reports and assist maintenance personnel with complex mechanical or electrical repairs.
• Perform snow, ice and litter removal from the bridge and surrounding sidewalks.
• Act as a flag person in emergencies, make police calls and drive a personal vehicle to other bridges when needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Familiarity with operation, maintenance or repair of heavy mechanical equipment.
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs up to 100 feet above water.
• Willingness to work various shifts and days.
• Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.

Required skills

• Operation of electrically controlled bridge mechanisms.
• Computer operation for logging and reporting.
• Heavy mechanical equipment maintenance.
