Elevator Mechanic

About the role

The Elevator Mechanic will ensure the safe, reliable operation of embassy elevators through routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs. Reporting to the Elevator Supervisor, you will work on mechanical and electrical systems to keep the elevators certified and operational.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
• Diagnose and repair faults in brakes, motors, switches, signal and control systems using test lamps, ammeters and voltmeters.
• Disassemble defective units and replace parts such as locks, gears, cables and safety devices.
• Lubricate bearings and other components to reduce friction.
• Install or repair transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units and conduit systems.
• Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings and wiring diagrams to locate equipment issues.
• Perform preventative maintenance according to published schedules and provide input for task upgrades.
• Conduct equipment tests with voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, continuity testers, feeler gauges and frequency counters.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; apprenticeship or Journeyman’s Certificate strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with European and/or US Electrical Codes and trade practices.
• Experience reading engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and manufacturers’ manuals.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multi‑task environment, including harsh conditions.

Required skills

• Electrical troubleshooting of brakes, motors, switches and control systems.
• Preventive maintenance of elevator mechanical and electrical components.
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics.
• Use of test equipment (voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, continuity tester, frequency counter).
• Installation and repair of transformers, switchboards, circuit breakers and related equipment.
• Knowledge of US Electrical Codes.
• Experience with Otis GEN2 MRL elevators (highly desirable).
• Familiarity with Amentum processes (desirable).
