Emergency Vehicle Technician

About the role

The Emergency Vehicle Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of fire‑department vehicles and heavy equipment. This role ensures that fire apparatus, ARFF trucks, ambulances and associated machinery are safe, reliable and ready for emergency response.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on fire trucks, ARFF units, ambulances and other heavy equipment.
• Remove, rebuild and reinstall engines, hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drives, suspensions, brakes and crane rigging.
• Repair air‑conditioning systems and calibrate load‑monitoring indicators.
• Use computerized test equipment, gauges and calibration devices to diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults.
• Document work orders, invoices and equipment repair records accurately.
• Adhere to safety policies, including proper handling of hazardous waste.
• Act as point‑of‑contact for maintenance issues in the absence of the supervisor.

Required profile

• Minimum two (2) years of heavy‑vehicle maintenance experience, preferably with emergency or military equipment.
• High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s licence.
• Prefer EVT Level 1 certification in Fire Apparatus, Ambulance or ARFF.
• Ability to work independently and follow established safety standards.

Required skills

• Diesel engine repair and overhaul.
• Hydraulic and pneumatic system maintenance.
• Electrical diagnostics using electronic test equipment.
• Calibration of load‑monitoring and HVAC systems.
• Rebuilding of hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drives, suspensions and brakes.
• Reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, ASME and OEM specifications.
