HVAC Technician I

About the role
The City of Dayton Public Works Department is seeking an HVAC Technician I to perform semi‑skilled maintenance and repair on its building systems. This entry‑level position supports heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning, electrical, and plumbing equipment across municipal facilities.
Key responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, install, and repair boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related HVAC equipment.
- Clean and replace filters, coils, and valves; test and adjust mechanical components.
- Perform basic electrical tasks, including soldering, brazing, and circuit troubleshooting, under supervision.
- Execute plumbing repairs associated with HVAC systems.
- Use building automation control software for diagnostics, energy management, and preventative maintenance.
- Maintain accurate service records, inventories, and coordinate with vendors and contractors.
- Assist senior technicians and electricians as needed.
Required profile
- High school diploma or G.E.D. and HVAC apprenticeship or trade certification.
- Minimum three years of experience in commercial/industrial HVAC repair, operation, installation, or maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license.
- EPA CFC Universal Certificate at time of appointment.
- Current City of Dayton civil service employee in a qualifying pay grade with at least six months continuous service (for promotional applicants).
