Lineworker – Construction & Maintenance of Electrical & Communication Lines

About the role

The City of Dayton is seeking a skilled Lineworker to construct, maintain, and repair communication and electrical lines as well as related infrastructure. This full‑time position involves field work on traffic and pedestrian fixtures, lighting, and high‑voltage wiring.

Key responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair communication lines, electrical lines, and associated equipment.
• Service traffic and pedestrian fixtures such as push buttons, park lamps, island lights, illuminating signs, and loop detectors.
• Work on communication and video cable networks.
• Perform tasks near primary circuits, trolley feeders, and other high‑voltage wiring.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least one year of experience repairing or maintaining electrical or communications systems.
• Valid driver’s license at appointment; obtain Ohio Commercial Learner’s Permit within 90 days and Class A CDL with air‑brake endorsement within 150 days.
• Current City of Dayton employee in a classified civil‑service position (pay grade 123 or lower) for six consecutive months.
• Pass a job‑related medical examination and provide proof of work authorization.

Required skills

• Knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in communication and power‑line construction and maintenance.
• Understanding of elementary electric theory as applied to transmission lines.
• Working knowledge of safety precautions for electric and communication line work.
