Maintenance Worker I – Public Works

About the role

The City of Poquoson is seeking a reliable, hands‑on Maintenance Worker I to join its Public Works Department. This full‑time, non‑exempt position involves physically demanding work that directly benefits the community by keeping streets, drainage systems, and public facilities safe and functional.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general infrastructure maintenance on streets and drainage projects.
• Load and unload gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, tools and equipment.
• Spread asphalt and other surface‑treatment materials.
• Assist with construction, repair, and upkeep of public buildings, grounds, and utilities.
• Operate basic construction equipment under moderate supervision.

Required profile

• Full‑time, non‑exempt status.
• Reliable and able to work independently on semi‑skilled tasks.
• Capable of performing physically demanding duties safely.
• Willingness to follow directions from project supervisors.

Required skills

• Operation of construction equipment (e.g., loaders, compactors).
• Asphalt spreading and surface‑treatment techniques.
• Basic knowledge of drainage and street‑maintenance procedures.
