Marine Spatial Data Analyst

About the role

Blue Ventures is seeking a Marine Spatial Data Analyst to support its marine conservation programmes in Kenya. The role involves integrating fisheries, ecological and spatial datasets to inform community‑based management and conservation decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Integrate and analyse small‑scale fisheries, marine ecology and spatial data for mapping and visualisation.
• Develop and maintain GIS layers for habitats, fishing grounds and management boundaries.
• Work with remote sensing and Earth observation datasets to support marine ecosystem assessments.
• Design and implement APIs to ensure smooth data flow between tools and systems.
• Create interactive visualisation tools using R Shiny or QGIS Lizmap.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Marine Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, Data Science, Geography or related field.
• At least 4 years of experience in mapping, spatial data analysis or marine spatial planning.
• Experience with small‑scale fisheries, marine conservation and community‑based natural resource management.

Required skills

• Proficiency in R and/or Python for reproducible data analysis.
• Strong GIS expertise with QGIS and PostGIS.
• SQL knowledge (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Esri SDE).
• API development and integration.
• JavaScript for web‑based tool development.
