About the role
The Mechanical Technician will join the Engineering & Maintenance department to ensure rapid, precise diagnostics and preventative maintenance of heavy mobile equipment and plant machinery, minimising downtime for our shipping and logistics operations.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out routine, scheduled and emergency mechanical maintenance on container handlers, reach stackers, heavy trucks and fixed plant equipment.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, rebuild and repair high‑pressure hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, control blocks and pneumatic braking systems.
- Perform full overhauls and fine‑tuning of heavy‑duty diesel engines (Cummins, Volvo, Caterpillar) and automatic/powershift transmissions.
- Execute mechanical alignment, bearing replacements and structural fitting of moving parts.
- Conduct minor structural modifications, oxy‑acetylene cutting and arc welding on chassis or attachments as required.
- Apply Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out (LOTO) safety procedures and manage hazardous waste disposal.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and documentation.
- Collaborate with electrical technicians on electro‑hydraulic systems.
Required profile
- Diploma or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a closely related field.
- Active registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) for diploma holders.
- 3–5 years hands‑on experience as an industrial mechanical technician or heavy plant mechanic.
- Experience with heavy material‑handling equipment or marine auxiliary systems in Kenyan ports is an advantage.
- Proficiency with hydraulic schematics, precision measuring tools and electronic diagnostic scan tools.
