Occupational Therapist Intern

About the role

The Occupational Therapist Intern will support clients of all ages in performing daily activities that matter to them, from personal care to work and community participation. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the intern will assess the impact of injury, illness, or developmental delay and help design practical interventions that promote independence.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy assessments covering functional ability, range of motion, strength, sensation, coordination, cognition and sensory processing.
• Develop individualized treatment plans with measurable goals and adjust them as clients progress.
• Deliver one‑on‑one and group therapy sessions focusing on activities of daily living, fine motor skills, sensory integration and cognitive retraining.
• Recommend, fabricate, fit and train clients in the safe use of assistive devices, orthoses, splints and adaptive equipment.
• Assess home, school and workplace environments and advise on modifications to support independence.
• Educate and coach families, caregivers and other professionals to ensure therapeutic strategies continue beyond formal sessions.
• Maintain accurate client records, progress notes and contribute to multidisciplinary case reviews.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognised institution.
• Current registration with the Kenya Occupational Therapy Association (KOTA) and the Occupational Therapy Council of Kenya (OTCK).
• Strong clinical reasoning and ability to translate assessment findings into goal‑directed interventions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with clients, families and health professionals.
• High integrity, ethical practice and respect for client dignity, informed consent and confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while knowing when to seek senior guidance.
• Reliable record‑keeping habits and basic competence with standard clinical documentation software.
• Willingness to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and adapt to shifting service demands.
