AI/ML Engineer Intern

About the role

You will join Pawanax’s Pawa-Med™ Intelligence Engine team to fine‑tune medical foundation models on African disease datasets, build Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines for clinical knowledge retrieval, and help advance AI‑driven diagnostics across the continent. The role is ideal for curious, mission‑driven builders eager to grow quickly while tackling real African healthcare challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Fine‑tune large language models (e.g., MedGemma, LLaMA, Mistral) on African clinical datasets.
• Design, implement, and optimise RAG pipelines for medical knowledge retrieval.
• Apply model quantisation techniques for edge or low‑resource deployment.
• Create evaluation benchmarks tailored to African healthcare contexts.
• Collaborate with clinicians to validate AI outputs in real‑world settings.
• Contribute to research papers and technical blog posts.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a BSc or MSc in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field.
• Strong passion for AI applications in healthcare, especially within African markets.
• Familiarity with medical NLP datasets such as MIMIC or PubMed is a plus.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• PyTorch and HuggingFace Transformers.
• LLM fine‑tuning techniques (LoRA, QLoRA, PEFT).
• Fundamental knowledge of NLP and transformer architectures.
• Experience with MLflow or Weights & Biases.
