Assistant Accountant

About the role

The Assistant Accountant will support the finance team of Burhani Engineers Limited by handling day‑to‑day accounting operations, maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with statutory and internal controls. This role is based in Nairobi and works within an engineering and projects environment.

Key responsibilities

• Execute month‑end and year‑end close processes, ensuring all accounts are reconciled accurately and promptly.
• Manage accounts payable: verify documentation, obtain approvals, prepare payment runs and maintain payable records.
• Maintain accounts receivable records and perform regular bank, credit‑card and petty‑cash reconciliations.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and support budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis.
• Ensure compliance with local tax regulations and accounting standards; liaise with auditors and tax consultants.
• Coordinate daily activities of Assistant Accountants/Accounts Assistants, review their work for accuracy and provide on‑the‑job training.
• Identify and implement improvements to accounting systems and processes.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in core accounting functions such as month‑end close, accounts payable and reconciliations.
• Ability to supervise and coach junior accounting staff and meet reporting deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and compliance.
