Head of Communications SSA

About the role

Uber is seeking a senior communications professional to shape and lead the narrative across its mobility and delivery businesses in Sub‑Saharan Africa. Based in Johannesburg, the role will oversee communications for key markets such as South Africa and Kenya, driving strategic campaigns and media relations.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute bold corporate and consumer‑facing communications campaigns that boost brand awareness and support business priorities.
• Act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on sensitive issues, delivering high‑stakes, time‑critical response strategies.
• Own the news cycle by working daily with beat reporters, balancing proactive and reactive communications to protect and enhance Uber’s reputation.
• Partner with marketing, public policy, legal and business teams to align messaging and amplify key narratives across all channels.
• Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership, positioning them as thought leaders and industry voices.
• Ensure brand consistency across external touchpoints and manage external agencies and vendors.
• Represent Uber as a spokesperson in media interviews, press briefings and public speaking engagements.
• Measure communications performance, analyse outcomes and refine strategies for stronger results.

Required profile

• Proven experience in communications within mobility, FMCG or consumer‑tech environments.
• 7+ years of corporate strategic communications and issues management, preferably in a globally matrixed organization.
• Strong media and influencer network with the ability to build cross‑functional relationships.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and sound news judgment.
• Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment, manage multiple projects and balance strategic thinking with tactical execution.
