Laboratory Lead – Fixed Term

About the role

One Acre Fund is seeking an experienced Laboratory Lead to oversee the set‑up, commissioning and daily operations of its Tupande processing laboratory in Kenya. The role ensures that all laboratory activities meet the highest food‑safety standards and support the company’s mission to improve smallholder farmer livelihoods.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain ISO 17025 quality systems to keep the lab internationally accredited.
• Serve as the main point of contact for regulators (KENAS, NEMA, DOSHS) and address system gaps before inspections.
• Conduct accuracy checks through proficiency testing and compare results with global benchmarks.
• Maintain and update all manuals, SOPs and testing methods according to international standards.
• Approve and develop chemical and microbiological testing methods for new products.
• Manage the installation, calibration and maintenance of high‑tech laboratory equipment.
• Provide final technical sign‑off on all test certificates before product release.
• Lead investigations of failed tests to determine root causes.
• Oversee laboratory expansion projects, including plumbing, HVAC and safety infrastructure.
• Control budgets for chemicals, consumables and equipment maintenance.
• Enforce strict safety protocols and ensure proper hazardous‑waste disposal.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience leading a food‑safety or quality laboratory.
• Proven track record with ISO 17025 accreditation and regulatory audits.
• Strong analytical mindset with ability to troubleshoot complex test failures.
• Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage budgets and lead technical projects.
