Mathematical Physicist (PhD)

About the role

CritPt runs a public benchmark that tests frontier AI models on genuine research‑level physics problems. The position involves contributing to this effort by tackling open problems in a narrowly defined sub‑field of mathematical physics.

Key responsibilities

• Design, solve, review, or audit research‑grade physics problems matched to your publication record.
• Produce complete, verifiable written reasoning that allows another specialist to follow and validate your work.

Required profile

• PhD in mathematical physics, theoretical physics or mathematics (post‑doc, research scientist, junior faculty or senior PhD student).
• Published first‑author papers (3‑5) on the specific phenomenon listed (special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics, or conformal geometry).

Required skills

• Proficiency with LaTeX, Python, SymPy and Jupyter notebooks.
• Working knowledge of VS Code (agentic coding extensions optional) and English at B2 level or higher.

What we offer

• 10 hours per week, remote and asynchronous work for an 8‑10 week period.
• Compensation of $80–$110 per hour, set according to depth of sub‑domain match.
