Mechanical Engineer – Retainer for UNOPS Projects

About the role

The Technical Services Unit (TSU) of UNOPS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer on a retainer basis to support a variety of projects across East and Southern Africa. The position is home‑based with occasional travel to project sites for assessments, design reviews and installation monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct site assessments of mechanical components and recommend sustainable, cost‑effective solutions.
• Perform mechanical systems analysis using appropriate software and produce detailed reports.
• Develop and review design drawings, specifications, and bills of quantity in line with UNOPS standards.
• Provide technical input for procurement specifications and support tender evaluations.
• Monitor installation of mechanical services on‑site and ensure compliance with design intent.

Required profile

• Mid‑level mechanical engineering professional with at least 24 months of relevant experience.
• Ability to work independently from home and travel to project locations as required.
• Strong analytical skills and experience preparing technical reports and cost estimates.
