Senior Coordination Officer

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Senior Coordination Officer to lead the Nairobi Convention Secretariat within the Regional Seas Branch. Based in Nairobi, the incumbent will support the implementation of the Convention’s environmental agenda for the Western Indian Ocean.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise the administration of the Nairobi Convention and its Secretariat, ensuring effective delivery of programmes and projects.
• Develop, implement and evaluate assigned programmes/projects, directing staff in project design, monitoring and assessment.
• Review relevant documents and reports, identify priorities, and propose corrective actions.
• Coordinate with Contracting Parties, prepare and convene meetings, conferences and high‑level sessions.
• Transmit notifications, reports and other information to Contracting Parties in line with Convention provisions.
• Liaise with relevant UN and external partners to foster cooperation and follow‑up actions.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in environmental programme coordination, preferably within UN or intergovernmental frameworks.
• Strong knowledge of Regional Seas Conventions and marine/coastal management.
• Proven leadership and staff management abilities.
• Experience organising high‑level meetings and drafting official documents.
• Familiarity with UN procedures and reporting mechanisms.
