Senior Project Accountant – Grants & Sub‑Grantee Management

About the role
The Senior Project Accountant will lead the financial management, reporting and compliance of a portfolio of grant‑funded projects. Working closely with programme teams, finance leadership, donors and implementing partners, you will ensure that project funds are used appropriately, reports are accurate and delivered on time, and all donor and regulatory requirements are met. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, reviews or to support sub‑grantees on site.
Key responsibilities
- Manage financial planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting for multiple grant‑funded projects.
- Review grant budgets, funding agreements and cost allocations to ensure correct implementation.
- Monitor expenditures against approved budgets, identify variances, risks and funding gaps, and recommend corrective actions.
- Prepare accurate donor‑required financial reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
- Support budget development, revisions, re‑forecasting and no‑cost extensions.
- Ensure proper coding, documentation and timely recording of grant transactions in the accounting system.
- Maintain audit‑ready grant finance files and documentation.
- Collaborate with technical practice teams to translate financial data into actionable insights for non‑financial leaders.
- Review sub‑grantee budgets, financial reports, cash requests and amendments.
- Monitor sub‑grantee expenditures, advances, liquidations and compliance with agreements.
- Conduct regular financial monitoring, spot checks and identify compliance risks.
- Provide guidance, training and capacity‑building to sub‑grantee finance personnel.
- Present clear financial overviews of project and sub‑grantee health in internal governance meetings.
Required profile
- Strong expertise in grant accounting and sub‑grantee financial management.
- Proven experience preparing donor financial reports and maintaining audit‑ready documentation.
- Ability to analyse budgets, monitor variances and implement corrective actions.
- Excellent communication skills for interaction with programme teams, donors and partners.
