Senior Security Officer

About the role

The Senior Security Officer will lead security and safety initiatives for UNOPS operations in Nairobi and surrounding project sites. Reporting to senior management, the incumbent will ensure personnel, assets and programmes are protected through robust risk management and coordination with UN security partners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide security advice and maintain awareness of security developments affecting UNOPS activities.
• Conduct and regularly update Security Risk Assessments (SRAs) for offices, project sites and travel routes.
• Develop and maintain local security management arrangements in line with UNSMS standards.
• Support inclusion of safety and security components in project proposals and budgets.
• Coordinate with UNDSS, host‑government authorities and UN agencies for information exchange and implementation of security measures.
• Manage travel security clearances through the TRIP platform and advise on safe access strategies for high‑risk field missions.
• Ensure UNOPS compounds, offices and residences meet required safety standards.
• Develop, implement and oversee an annual security work plan and budget.

Required profile

• Mid‑level professional with at least 48 months of relevant security experience.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent professional judgment.
• Experience working in an international NGO or UN environment is preferred.
• Strong understanding of UN security frameworks and host‑government procedures.
