Specialist in Sargassum Seaweed Blooms

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a specialist to lead the preparation of a Global Report on Sargassum seaweed blooms. The consultant will synthesize existing activities, identify gaps, and provide evidence‑based recommendations to support international cooperation and high‑level policy discussions.

Key responsibilities

• Review and consolidate existing documentation, scientific literature, and UNEP training material on Sargassum.
• Engage with UNEP headquarters, regional offices, and convention secretariats to collect inputs and coordinate reviews.
• Conduct targeted desk research to fill information gaps, especially for West Africa, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.
• Draft, revise, and finalize the Global Report, integrating feedback from peer reviewers, regional offices, and stakeholders.
• Facilitate bilateral consultations with regional organizations and support the creation of a technical network of universities and experts.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Marine Science, Oceanography, Environmental Management or related field (or a first‑level degree plus two years experience).
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience on marine and coastal environmental issues, preferably with exposure to harmful algal blooms or marine pollution.
• Excellent writing and communication skills, with proven experience in technical report writing and stakeholder coordination.
• Demonstrated ability to work with governments, intergovernmental organizations, and regional bodies.
