Staff Back-End Engineer – Remote (Europe/Africa time zones)

About the role

OpenFn is looking for a Staff Back-End Engineer to join its Connections squad. You will help make it dramatically cheaper for government departments to collaborate by turning integration challenges into reusable capabilities.

Key responsibilities

• Ship production‑ready features from technical proposal through to deployment.
• Build core backend capabilities such as system registration, credential sharing, and high‑performance workers that execute workflows at scale.
• Shape and set the architectural direction of OpenFn’s backend, defining module boundaries, service interfaces and naming conventions.
• Establish consistent patterns and guidelines to help engineers navigate and extend the codebase, including when using AI‑assisted development tools.
• Participate in design discussions, code reviews and written proposals to ensure high quality and maintainability.

Required profile

• Strong professional‑level English communication skills.
• Experience working remotely across Europe/Africa time zones.
• Self‑motivated individual contributor comfortable with full‑time contract work.
• Ability to learn and adopt new technologies, specifically Elixir/Phoenix.
