Underwriter – Insurance Operations (Kisumu)

About the role

The Underwriter will provide operational support across the underwriting lifecycle, acting as the primary point of contact for customers and internal stakeholders. The role ensures end‑to‑end service management while adhering to governance and control standards.

Key responsibilities

• Send renewal notices with appropriate terms at least 60 days before expiry.
• Issue policy documents within the stipulated turnaround time.
• Provide immediate documentation support to the claims department.
• Approve and manage major quotations and retain existing accounts.
• Assist in credit control and oversee the retention portfolio in line with business strategy.
• Assess risk, conduct analysis, and recommend policy solutions to control loss.
• Identify portfolio risks arising from client practices, underwriting investigations, or fraud exposure.
• Coordinate with internal teams to launch marketing strategies and achieve growth targets.
• Review, accept or deny new and renewal business after thorough evaluation.
• Address escalated customer issues proactively.
• Engage with brokers, agents, and bancassurance partners to expand market reach.
• Negotiate coverage, pricing, and service delivery with customers and intermediaries.
• Calculate renewal rates based on client background, industry, and demographics.
• Assist in the classification and rating of applications.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business, or a related field.
• Progress in an Insurance Professional Qualification.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in underwriting.
• Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce and Management Studies.
