WASH Assistant – Mandera (Humanitarian)

About the role

The WASH Assistant will support the WASH Officer in delivering quality water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in Mandera and surrounding counties. The role focuses on emergency response, construction of WASH infrastructure and integration with other sectors such as health, nutrition and education.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise construction or rehabilitation of WASH facilities (tanks, boreholes, reticulation systems) and hold site meetings with contractors and community representatives.
• Plan and lead hygiene promotion activities and coordinate distribution of WASH non‑food items (jerricans, buckets, soap, water treatment chemicals).
• Maintain documentation, capture success stories and ensure quality checks on contractor work using Save the Children checklists.
• Validate progress and quality of work, liaise with logistics and administration for timely payments.
• Integrate WASH construction with gender, child protection, environmental and other cross‑cutting issues and coordinate with other programme sectors.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Public Health or Sanitation.
• Minimum 2 years experience in WASH infrastructure construction in humanitarian or development settings.
• Proven project management experience, including budgeting, timelines and community participation.
• Strong monitoring and evaluation knowledge and ability to produce clear assessment reports.
• Excellent communication, influencing skills and cultural sensitivity; fluent in English and able to communicate in Kiswahili and/or Somali.
