AI & Data Application Development Engineer

About the role

The PI – Digital & AI Business Enablement department is looking for an AI & Data Application Development Engineer in Kenya. This applied R&D role combines software development, data analysis, AI applications and business problem solving. You will work closely with retail, channel, marketing and sales teams to build AI agents, data tools, automated workflows and business systems. Candidates need a solid technical and data foundation and strong learning ability, rather than being AI experts.

Key responsibilities

• Work with retail stores, distributors, channel partners, marketing and sales teams to understand business processes and document operational challenges.
• Turn business requirements into product specifications, workflows, user stories and development tasks.
• Collect, clean, validate and analyse data on sales, inventory, store execution, channel operations, marketing campaigns and user behaviour.
• Help design and develop AI agent applications, automated workflows, dashboards and lightweight business apps.
• Support integration of internal systems, databases, APIs and third-party platforms.
• Take part in prototyping, testing, UAT, pilot runs and production deployments.
• Support user training, feedback collection and issue resolution, and prepare weekly project reports.
• Analyse issues, recommend improvements, and help adapt solutions to local data, processes and regulations.
• Write user manuals, process documentation and technical documentation, and turn local experience into reusable assets for the company's AI Agent platform.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, Data Science, AI, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or a related field.
• 2-5 years of relevant work experience preferred.
• Strong academic performance, logical thinking, learning ability and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to turn ambiguous business problems into structured requirements and solutions.
• Willingness to visit retail stores, markets and business sites.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python or another mainstream programming language.
• Understanding of SQL, databases, APIs, data structures and software development fundamentals.
• Basic familiarity with data analysis, machine learning, LLMs, AI agents, prompt engineering, RAG or workflow automation.
• Written and spoken English; Chinese is an advantage.

Prefers: experience in AI, data analysis or software development, a technical portfolio, and interest in retail, FMCG or channel distribution.
