Senior Litigation Counsel (Enforcement and Affirmative Litigation)

About the role

The Senior Litigation Counsel leads complex civil enforcement and affirmative litigation within the Department of Justice's Enforcement and Affirmative Litigation Branch. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the incumbent supervises trial attorneys and paralegal specialists while serving as lead counsel on high‑impact cases.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and mentor trial attorneys and paralegal staff across both Enforcement and Affirmative Litigation sections.
• Lead preparation and conduct of hearings, settlement negotiations, and trials in federal, state, and administrative courts.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal memoranda based on extensive factual and legal research.
• Participate in pre‑trial conferences, manage case files, and oversee evidence development.
• Handle appellate litigation as needed and ensure compliance with departmental policy.
• Assess attorney performance, training needs, and case progress for senior leadership.

Required profile

• Bar admission and a Juris Doctor degree.
• Extensive experience in civil litigation, including enforcement and affirmative actions.
• Proven ability to manage complex, novel legal issues and supervise legal teams.
• Strong written and oral advocacy skills in federal and state courts.
