Accountant

About the role

A full-time, on-site Accountant is needed in Nairobi to oversee the day-to-day running of the accounts department. The role covers accurate financial record-keeping, compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, financial management and the timely preparation of financial statements and reports. It also includes coordinating financial reporting for donor-funded projects, supporting budget management, facilitating audits and maintaining sound financial controls.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain up-to-date books of accounts and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and management reports, including donor-specific reports in line with grant agreements.
• Support budget preparation, monitoring and variance analysis, maintain the fixed asset register and coordinate annual and project audits.
• File and pay taxes, PAYE, NSSF and other statutory obligations on time, and keep a compliance calendar for licences, permits and registrations.
• Custody the department's accounting records and contracts, keeping them classified, securely stored and retrievable.
• Monitor bank and cash balances, process transactions and manage accounts payable and staff and supplier payments.
• Review general ledger accounts, flag discrepancies and respond to stakeholder queries within 48-72 hours.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field; CPA or ACCA qualification preferred.
• At least 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience.
• Experience in media, production, NGO, donor-funded or multi-project organisations is an added advantage.

Required skills

• Experience with accounting software and strong Microsoft Excel skills.
• Sound knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting and statutory compliance.
• Numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and good communication skills.
