About the role

The Head of the Chemicals Science and Policy Unit will provide strategic leadership for UNEP’s work on scientific information and policy advice related to chemicals and pollution. Reporting to the Chief of the Chemicals and Health Branch, the incumbent will shape global engagement, drive innovation and oversee unit operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and lead UNEP’s contribution to collecting and analysing sound scientific information on key chemicals and related pollution challenges, setting priorities for emerging issues.
  • Serve as a thought leader linking scientific data to policy advice, supporting parties in meeting obligations under chemicals agreements.
  • Engage with global policy processes such as the Intergovernmental Science Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution and contribute to position papers, reports and policy briefs.
  • Oversee initiatives that analyse and improve access to scientific information on chemicals, their economic contexts and innovative solutions for policy making.
  • Direct the unit’s operations, including budget management, resource mobilisation and staff leadership, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.

Required profile

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s) in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science or related field (or Bachelor’s with two additional years of relevant experience).
  • Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience generating and managing scientific information on environmental issues, especially chemicals.
  • Demonstrated experience working with policy makers or regulatory agencies at national or international level and advocating for science‑based policies.
  • Leadership experience managing cross‑functional scientific teams.

Required skills

  • Data analytics and data science knowledge.
  • Understanding of chemical safety, toxicology and environmental management.
