About the role
The Lead Fintech Oversight & Governance role reports to the Group Chief Corporate & External Affairs Officer and is responsible for shaping Safaricom’s regulatory strategy for its digital financial services and fintech ecosystem, ensuring compliance, risk management and sustainable innovation. The position drives engagement with the Central Bank of Kenya and other regulators, embeds regulatory foresight into product design and supports subsidiaries across markets.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and execute Safaricom’s end‑to‑end fintech regulatory strategy aligned with commercial ambitions and prudential requirements.
- Lead senior‑level engagement with the Central Bank of Kenya and other financial regulators to secure approvals, shape policy interpretation and manage systemic regulatory risk.
- Safeguard the Group’s financial services licence by ensuring robust compliance positioning, regulatory readiness and alignment with consumer‑protection, capital and operational risk expectations.
- Embed regulatory considerations into product design, commercial planning and new fintech initiatives to accelerate time‑to‑market while mitigating exposure.
- Provide structured oversight and strategic support to subsidiaries, ensuring alignment with Group standards and effective local execution.
Required profile
- Business, Finance or Law degree.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in fintech governance, regulatory strategy or related legal/financial roles.
- Proven track record of engaging with central banks or financial regulators and influencing policy.
- Strong understanding of digital payments, open banking, AI‑enabled financial services and emerging fintech models.
