Linux Devices Software Engineer – Kernel & Hardware Enablement

About the role

Canonical is looking for a Linux Devices Software Engineer to work on kernel drivers and hardware enablement for Ubuntu on IoT and server‑class platforms. You will join a globally distributed team, contribute to open‑source projects, and help customers ship their applications on Ubuntu.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, integrate and maintain device‑oriented software stacks and kernel drivers.
• Build and optimise Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server images for specific silicon.
• Debug complex issues, produce high‑quality code fixes, and contribute technical documentation.
• Collaborate with global teams and act as a technical lead on customer engagements.
• Participate in community discussions and represent Canonical in external forums.
• Travel twice a year for company events (2‑4 weeks total).

Required profile

• Outstanding academic record from high school through university.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related STEM field, or a compelling alternative pathway.
• Strong passion for Linux, embedded systems and open‑source development.
• Professional fluency in written and spoken English.
• Willingness to travel for company events.

Required skills

• Linux kernel development (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).
• Embedded systems software (Yocto, graphics, device drivers).
• Programming in Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
• Building device OS images with Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server.
• Debugging and performance optimisation for silicon‑specific capabilities.
