Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Boost is scaling its commerce and fintech platform for FMCG manufacturers and informal retailers across Africa. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will join a small, high‑performing team building Python‑driven services that power WhatsApp ordering, offline sales apps, fulfilment, and digital payments. You will work closely with product, engineering and country teams to deliver reliable, high‑quality features.

Key responsibilities

• Write elegant, performant, well‑tested Python code for new features and existing services.
• Collaborate with product and engineering peers to define, scope, and deliver work items.
• Reduce technical debt by planning and executing refactors.
• Mentor teammates through pair programming, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
• Prepare clean pull requests and actively participate in broader engineering initiatives.
• Contribute to the Platform roadmap and align with in‑country product teams on requirements.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Deep knowledge of Python and ability to write clear, Pythonic code.
• Experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, and strong SQL skills.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Background in fast‑growing startups and comfort with shifting priorities.
• Curiosity, strong communication skills, and a passion for learning.
