Accounting Associate

About the role

HIAS is looking for an Accounting Associate to join its finance team. The role supports day‑to‑day financial operations, ensuring accurate processing of invoices, payments, and cash management while complying with donor and tax regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Review client financial assistance requests and schedule payments.
• Handle petty cash and M‑Pesa transactions, maintaining ledgers and cash‑count certificates.
• Process client assistance and program requisitions.
• Prepare and issue payments to suppliers.
• Assist with balance‑sheet reconciliations and monthly bank reconciliations.
• Verify incoming invoices for accuracy, approvals, and documentation compliance.
• Support donor budget preparation and budgetary control reporting.
• Provide documentation for internal and external audit of accounts payable.
• Compile procurement files, generate local purchase orders, and enter transactions into NetSuite.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Degree in Accounting or Finance, or CPA qualification.
• Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience.
• Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
• Organizational flexibility and ability to work under pressure.
• Knowledge of procurement, financial compliance in the NGO sector, and local tax obligations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the NetSuite Accounting System.
