Addiction Counselor

About the role

Outspan Hospital in Westlands, Nairobi, is hiring an Addiction Counselor. The counselor works with clients seeking help for substance use, providing assessment, counseling and support through the recovery process.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive substance-use and psychosocial assessments to identify clients' treatment needs, strengths and risks.
• Develop individualized treatment and recovery plans with clients and the multidisciplinary treatment team.
• Provide individual, group and family counseling using evidence-based approaches such as Motivational Interviewing and relapse-prevention interventions.
• Give psychoeducation on addiction, recovery, coping skills, healthy lifestyles and relapse prevention to clients and their families.
• Support clients across the recovery continuum, including engagement, treatment, abstinence, relapse management, reintegration and aftercare.
• Monitor progress, identify barriers to recovery and recommend adjustments to treatment.
• Provide crisis intervention within scope of practice and refer to medical, mental health or specialized services when needed.
• Develop discharge and aftercare plans with clients and the team.
• Maintain accurate, confidential client records and outcome data in line with hospital, departmental and Ministry of Health standards.
• Take part in clinical audits, quality improvement and continuous professional development.

Required profile

• Diploma in Counseling Psychology from a recognized institution.
• Evidence of training in addiction or chemical dependency counseling.
• At least three years of experience in a similar position.
• Registered member of the Counselors and Psychologists Board (CPB).
