About the role
The Budget and Finance Intern will join the Budget, Finance and Operational Support Section (BFOSS) at UN‑Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi. Reporting to a Budget and Finance Officer, the intern will support the planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of financial and budgetary resources for the organization.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in reviewing, consolidating and collecting inputs for the preparation of annual financial statements and related disclosures.
- Prepare donor contribution receipts and support documentation for recognition and recording of contributions, including unearmarked funding.
- Coordinate petty‑cash reporting across duty stations and help reconcile accounts payable transactions for recurring expenditures.
- Support documentation and analysis of budget‑related discussions and decisions from Executive Board and other governing body meetings.
- Monitor budget implementation and expenditure trends, identifying variances, risks and areas needing regularisation.
- Organise, develop and maintain section records, reference material, templates and standard operating procedures.
- Assist in monitoring inputs related to the UN Business Operations Strategy, coordinate meetings, prepare minutes and maintain documentation.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Required profile
- Be enrolled in a graduate programme, in the final year of a first‑degree programme, or hold a Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD degree.
- Demonstrated interest in United Nations work and commitment to its ideals.
- Computer literate with standard software applications.
Required skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
