Chief Operating Officer (COO)

About the role

LSTM Kenya is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer to lead and integrate operations across its Nairobi and Kisumu sites. The COO will translate research strategy into efficient, compliant, and resilient operations, ensuring the organisation delivers on its mission to improve health outcomes in Kenya and the region.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute the strategic vision for LSTM Kenya’s multi‑site health research portfolio.
• Drive operational excellence across field, laboratory and community‑based activities.
• Strengthen governance, risk management and compliance frameworks.
• Ensure financial sustainability and oversee budgeting, reporting and resource allocation.
• Harmonise systems, processes and organisational culture between the Nairobi and Kisumu offices.
• Represent LSTM Kenya with funders, government agencies, regulators and academic partners.
• Foster existing partnerships and cultivate new collaborations with KEMRI, the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.

Required profile

• Proven executive leadership experience in a complex, multi‑site environment.
• Strong background in health research, global health or related non‑profit sectors.
• Demonstrated ability to manage financial performance, risk and compliance.
• Excellent strategic thinking and change‑management skills.
• Experience working with governmental and academic partners in Kenya.
