Communication & Advocacy Consultant for Environmental Projects

About the role

The Communication & Advocacy Consultant will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications and visibility strategy for UNEP’s wastewater surveillance programmes in Africa. The role supports project impact, donor visibility and stakeholder engagement across multiple UN and partner agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a project communications plan aligned with UNEP and European Commission priorities.
• Create and edit high‑quality knowledge products (news stories, policy briefs, web content, newsletters, donor reports, etc.).
• Manage digital channels, update UNEP webpages and social media, and produce multimedia assets such as videos, animations, infographics, podcasts and photography.
• Provide communications guidance for high‑level stakeholder engagements, webinars, workshops and launch events.
• Coordinate procurement, monitoring and quality assurance of external communications service providers.
• Track communications performance, analyse digital engagement data and report on visibility indicators.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in Communications Studies, Organizational Communication or a related field.
• Minimum five years of experience preparing communication and advocacy materials for UN agencies or similar international environments.
• Proven experience with multi‑country programmes on wastewater or environmental surveillance, especially in Africa.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, audience‑appropriate messages.
