Communication Coordinator (Consultant)

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Communication Coordinator consultant in Nairobi for a 12-month assignment supporting the Nature Frameworks Support Unit (NFSU) in the Biodiversity and Land Branch. The service delivers a communication strategy and production plan, and audience-ready products that communicate the results and impact of the EAS project, the NBSAP/7NR project and the Unit's wider Nature Action portfolio. The primary audiences are national focal points, project teams, the CBD and GEF Secretariats and implementing partners.

Key responsibilities

• Phase 1 (months 1-3): study UNEP Communication Division guidelines, run a gap analysis of existing communication systems, map stakeholders and audiences, and finalize a communication strategy with a simple results framework, a quarterly rolling editorial calendar and communication guidelines.
• Phase 2 (months 3-11): produce at least two communication products per month (web and case stories, results briefs, factsheets, infographics, opinion pieces, photo stories, short videos) with social media content, and at least one knowledge product summarizing country experience from NBSAP updates and national reports.
• Conduct a mid-term review in month 6, keep a verified set of portfolio figures, and organize at least two capacity-building sessions for project teams and partners.
• Coordinate with UNDP, the CBD Secretariat, the GEF and the Communication Division for consistent joint communication, and support key global and regional events and meetings.
• Phase 3 (months 11-12): review implementation, prepare a final report with lessons learned and a sustainability section, and hand over all communication assets and the asset repository.
