Design Engineering Fellowship – Clean Cookstoves

About the role

BURN is seeking a mission‑driven Design Engineering Fellow to work in its Ruiru factory, designing clean‑burning cookstoves for the East African market. The 12‑month fellowship combines product development, manufacturing process work and hands‑on testing.

Key responsibilities

• Conceptual and detailed design of clean‑burning cookstoves for East Africa.
• Research and develop manufacturing processes, including designing production tools.
• Fabricate components using sheet‑metal forming, welding and general metal work.
• Test prototypes in laboratory and field settings.

Required profile

• Mechanical engineering, product development or industrial design background.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of heat transfer, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
• Practical experience in CNC, sheet‑metal or production environments.
• High organisational skills and ability to work well in a team.

Required skills

• SolidWorks.
• Use of drill press, mill and lathe.
• CNC machining.
• Sheet‑metal fabrication.
