Director of Audit – Public Sector Leadership

About the role

The Director of Audit provides senior technical leadership for external audits across national and county governments and international institutions. The role ensures audit quality, compliance with the Constitution of Kenya, the Public Audit Act, INTOSAI standards and OAG methodology, and delivers audit reports within statutory timelines.

Key responsibilities

• Formulate, implement and review the Directorate’s strategy and annual audit plans in line with corporate objectives.
• Coordinate and supervise audits of national government sectors, county governments, public entities and international institutions.
• Oversee quality management of audits, ensuring adherence to audit standards, legal frameworks and OAG practices.
• Represent the Auditor‑General in parliamentary committees, INTOSAI working groups and other stakeholder forums.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives, stakeholder engagement and the development of audit reports for submission to the Auditor‑General.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Auditing, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or related field; CPA‑K qualification preferred.
• At least 15 years of practical auditing experience, with a minimum of three years at Deputy Director level or equivalent in the public sector.
• Good standing with a recognised professional accounting body and knowledge of the Constitution of Kenya (Chapter Six).
• Strategic Leadership Development Programme or equivalent qualification is an advantage.

Required skills

• CPA‑K certification.
• Practical knowledge and application of Audit Management Systems.
