Electrical Design Engineer – Renewable Energy

About the role

We are looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to join a leading renewable energy consulting firm in Nairobi. The role focuses on the design and engineering of inverter stations, medium‑voltage transformer and switching stations, and utility metering systems for utility‑scale solar projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design inverter stations, MV transformer stations, MV switching stations and utility metering systems.
• Interpret specifications and drawings to create safe, functional designs for cable layouts, equipment placement, lighting, earthing and lightning protection using CAD tools.
• Perform cable tray and trench sizing, develop cable routing layouts, and design underground raceways.
• Prepare single‑line diagrams, main control room (MCR) and inverter station (IS) layouts, and conduct cable sizing calculations.
• Enhance existing AutoCAD applications with plugins and ensure compliance with national and international codes and standards.
• Collaborate with internal teams, vendors and clients, and stay updated on new product technologies.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering (B.E. or B.Tech).
• 1–3 years of experience in solar PV design, substation engineering or power system studies.
• Willingness to travel for site visits in Kenya and abroad.
• Ability to produce technical reports, documentation and checklists.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Strong knowledge of IEC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, SEC and IS standards.
• Experience with Solar PV design, substation design and power system studies.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
