Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Package Management

About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for Ubuntu package management, software distribution, driver and firmware management, and release processes. The role combines technical leadership with people management, shaping engineering direction while supporting the growth of experienced engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Technical leadership: define the vision and roadmap for package management and system lifecycle technologies.
• Architecture and engineering decisions: participate in design reviews and guide key technical decisions.
• Engineering excellence: promote high standards for performance, reliability, security, compatibility, maintainability, and overall software quality.
• Team leadership: lead and support a team of experienced engineers, fostering ownership and collaboration.
• Talent development: mentor engineers and help them strengthen technical leadership.
• Delivery management: plan and deliver improvements across multiple release cycles.
• Quality and reliability: improve test automation, release quality, engineering processes, and operational reliability.
• Cross‑functional collaboration: build strong partnerships with desktop, server, security, release engineering, product, OEM, and other functions.
• Open source collaboration: work with Debian, upstream projects, and the wider open source community.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic performance with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent professional background.
• Strong professional experience in software engineering, system design, and complex technical platforms.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams, including people management and coaching.
• Experience developing or operating Linux distribution technologies, package management systems, or software distribution infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of systems software and operating system architecture.
• Familiarity with package repositories, archives, package management, or software lifecycle technologies.
• Understanding of release engineering processes and challenges.
• Experience contributing to Debian, Ubuntu, or other open source infrastructure projects is an advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work within a globally distributed engineering organization.
• Willingness to travel internationally approximately twice per year.
