Entry Level Gemmologist – State Department for Mining

About the role

The Public Service Commission is recruiting entry‑level gemmologists for the State Department for Mining, Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. The role involves laboratory analysis, gemstone grading and supporting mineral resource management.

Key responsibilities

• Examine and identify minerals using basic, standard and advanced testing equipment.
• Collect, analyse and interpret mineralogical data for resource management decisions.
• Grade and value gemstones to determine market value.
• Process, pulverise and homogenise ore and mineral samples for laboratory analysis.
• Perform quantitative analyses using XRF, XRD and spectrometer systems.
• Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring accurate results and proper chain‑of‑custody documentation.
• Evaluate rough gemstones to estimate weight recovery and maximise polished yield.
• Supervise precision gemstone processing such as sawing, pre‑forming, faceting and cabochon cutting.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Mineral Processing or Materials Engineering from a recognised Kenyan university.
• Proficiency in using gemological testing instruments.

What we offer

• Basic salary scale Ksh 45,210 – Ksh 61,020 per month (CSG 10)
• House allowance Ksh 9,600 – Ksh 16,500 per month
• Commuter allowance Ksh 5,000 per month
• Leave allowance and 30 working days annual leave as per civil service rules

• Permanent, pensionable position
