About the role
The World Food Programme is seeking a Finance Assistant (G5) to support its Nairobi office. The role provides procedural and technical assistance to ensure compliance with WFP financial policies and to facilitate accurate budgeting and reporting.
Key responsibilities
- Assist staff with finance and budget procedures, ensuring adherence to WFP policies.
- Monitor monthly expenditure forecasts and produce reports for decision‑making.
- Manage sub‑imprest bank and petty‑cash accounts, guaranteeing sufficient funds and proper disbursement.
- Verify vendor claims, advances and receivables, following procurement rules to ensure timely payments.
- Compile data from various sources to prepare budget, accounting, finance and statistical reports.
- Retrieve, format and validate information from financial information systems, flagging discrepancies.
- Monitor account balances and process transactions to avoid overdrafts.
- Maintain the web‑based register for invoices and payment transfers, ensuring documentation complies with WFP standards.
- Record expenses against approved budgets and process payments to external suppliers and cash grants.
- Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to support staff.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting.
- Five or more years of experience in finance and accounting, preferably with public accounting exposure.
- Membership in a professional accountancy body is an advantage.
- Fluent oral and written English.
