General Manager – Underwriting & Reinsurance

About the role

The General Manager – Underwriting & Reinsurance is responsible for the company’s technical results across underwriting, reinsurance, customer service and departmental operations. Reporting to the Executive Committee, the role defines underwriting strategy, pricing, risk appetite and designs a reinsurance programme that protects capital while supporting profitable growth.

Key responsibilities

• Set underwriting policy, guidelines and risk appetite for all non‑life classes and oversee acceptance of large, complex risks.
• Design, negotiate and secure annual reinsurance programmes (treaty and facultative) and ensure compliance with statutory cessions and IRA regulations.
• Lead portfolio remediation activities, including repricing, re‑underwriting and exiting loss‑making segments.
• Monitor loss ratios, combined ratios and premium leakage; work with actuarial and claims teams to adjust pricing.
• Maintain underwriting and reinsurance risk registers, support IFRS 17, ORSA and capital adequacy processes.
• Develop and retain a high‑performing technical team, championing professional qualifications and digital underwriting tools.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science or related field; MBA is an advantage.
• ACII (or equivalent) certification.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in insurance underwriting and reinsurance, with at least 5 years in senior management.
• Proven ability to shape company strategy as an Executive Committee member.
• Strong knowledge of non‑life insurance products, underwriting standards and regulatory requirements (IRA).
