General Manager - Underwriting & Reinsurance

About the role

The General Manager – Underwriting & Reinsurance leads Old Mutual’s technical results across underwriting, reinsurance, customer service and departmental operations. As an ExCo member, the role shapes strategy, ensures profitable growth within the Board‑approved risk appetite and complies with regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute a three‑year underwriting and reinsurance strategy, set portfolio mix targets and represent the function at Board committees.
• Set underwriting policy, guidelines and risk appetite for all non‑life classes, oversee large and complex risk acceptance and drive portfolio remediation.
• Own technical pricing and rating models, monitor loss and combined ratios, and approve new products and regulatory filings.
• Design and negotiate the annual reinsurance programme, ensure statutory compliance and manage counter‑party risk and accounting.
• Maintain risk registers, support IFRS 17, ORSA and AML/CFT compliance, and uphold Treating Customers Fairly principles.
• Lead, develop and retain a high‑performing technical team, champion digital underwriting tools and foster a culture aligned with Old Mutual’s purpose.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years experience in general insurance, with at least 5 years in senior management.
• Bachelor’s degree (MBA advantageous) and professional qualifications such as ACII.
• Strong knowledge of all non‑life insurance products, underwriting and reinsurance practices.
• Excellent communication, analytical and assessment skills, with the ability to interact at all organisational levels.
