General Manager - Underwriting & Reinsurance

About the role

The General Manager – Underwriting & Reinsurance leads the technical results of the insurer, overseeing underwriting, reinsurance, customer service and departmental operations. As an Executive Committee member, the role shapes strategy, ensures profitable growth and complies with regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Set underwriting policy, guidelines and risk appetite across all non‑life classes and maintain a tiered authority framework.
• Design, negotiate and secure Board approval for the annual reinsurance programme (treaty and facultative) to protect capital and earnings.
• Lead the technical input into the three‑year business plan, budget and capital plan, and represent underwriting at Board committees.
• Monitor loss ratios, combined ratios and premium leakage, working with actuarial and claims teams to adjust pricing and manage risk.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience in general insurance, with at least 5 years in senior management.
• Bachelor’s degree required; MBA considered an advantage.
• Proven leadership in building high‑performing technical teams and succession planning.

Required skills

• Technical underwriting and reinsurance expertise across all non‑life classes.
• Pricing and rating model development in collaboration with actuarial functions.
• Catastrophe and accumulation exposure modelling.
• Regulatory compliance knowledge (IRA, IFRS 17, ORSA) and risk‑based capital processes.
