Heavy Lift Operator – High-Capacity Cranes

About the role

The Heavy Lift Operator will manage critical, high‑risk lifts of out‑of‑gauge cargo, project breakbulk and heavy industrial machinery at our Mombasa and Lamu ports. This full‑time position requires millimetre precision, strict adherence to engineered lift plans and seamless coordination with rigging crews.

Key responsibilities

• Operate heavy lifting equipment (cranes >100 ton capacity) to mobilise, position, load and discharge project cargo and OOG containers.
• Analyse and follow engineered lifting plans, rigging matrices and load charts before each lift.
• Collaborate with certified signalers, banksmen and riggers to ensure clear communication and safe weight distribution.
• Conduct pre‑operational checks on structural, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems, including testing the Automatic Safe Load Indicator (ASLI).
• Verify ground stability, outrigger pad placement and cribbing layouts to prevent equipment tilting.
• Maintain compliance with international standards (ASME, BS 7121) and local EHS policies.

Required profile

• KCSE or technical equivalent.
• 5–7 years of experience operating cranes or lifting equipment over 100 tons in a busy port, marine terminal or heavy construction site.
• Valid NTSA Special Stamp (Class G) and Class B/C/E driving licence with forklift endorsement.
• Independent Heavy Lift Operator certification from an accredited body.
• Experience with Kenya Ports Authority installations is an advantage.
• Full physical and medical fitness clearance.
