Independent Director, Digital and Operational Resilience
Deloitte East Africa · Nairobi
Job description
About the role
A publicly listed Kenyan enterprise in the energy, resources and industrials sector is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director through Deloitte East Africa. This is a full Board appointment, not a purely technical role: the Director brings technology or resilience expertise to wider Board discussions on strategy, performance, risk and governance. The client is looking for a senior technology, cybersecurity, engineering or resilience leader who can explain complex issues clearly and focus discussion on business impact.
Key responsibilities
- Take an active part in the Board's oversight of strategy, performance, risk and governance, exercising independent judgement and avoiding relationships that could compromise objectivity.
- Review the organisation's technology direction, digital transformation plans and governance arrangements.
- Test whether management is prepared to prevent, manage and recover from a serious cyber incident, and examine business-continuity and resilience plans for critical operations, including reliance on key third parties.
- Help the Board judge whether key systems and digital infrastructure are secure, reliable and resilient.
- Scrutinise major technology investments, delivery risks and expected benefits, and help the Board consider emerging technologies.
- Contribute across the Board agenda beyond technology and resilience, and support high standards of governance, accountability, disclosure and confidentiality.
Required profile
- Meets all statutory eligibility, independence, integrity, competence, time commitment and fitness to serve requirements for a listed issuer.
- Independent of the organisation, its management and significant shareholders, with no unresolved conflict of interest.
- Degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, information security or a related field; a postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
- Substantial senior executive or Board-level experience in cybersecurity, technology leadership, digital infrastructure or operational resilience within a complex organisation.
- Demonstrated experience in technology governance and risk oversight at executive or Board level.
- Clear communication, sound judgement and collaborative approach; experience adds value to the Board's diversity.
Required skills
- Practical knowledge of cyber incident management, business continuity, disaster recovery, third-party risk and resilience testing.
- A relevant professional certification such as CISA, CISM, CISSP or an equivalent is strongly preferred.
- Advantageous: experience in a regulated or complex organisation, oversight of complex technology ecosystems and third-party services, and previous service on a Board or risk, technology or audit committee.
Applications close on 17 November 2026 via the online recruitment platform, with the prescribed form, declarations, a CV and proof of qualifications. Shortlisted candidates face competency-based interviews and due diligence; the client decides appointments.
