About the role
The Internal Medicine Consultant provides expert care for adult patients with complex, multi‑system illnesses. Working across outpatient clinics, inpatient wards and bedside consultations, the role ensures accurate diagnosis, coordinated treatment and continuity of care for chronic conditions.
Key responsibilities
- Take comprehensive histories, perform physical examinations and formulate differential diagnoses for acute, chronic and undifferentiated medical complaints.
- Order, interpret and act on laboratory and imaging investigations, escalating urgent findings.
- Lead inpatient care on assigned wards, including daily reviews, treatment adjustments, discharge planning and follow‑up for long‑term conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart failure and chronic respiratory disease.
- Run scheduled outpatient clinics for new referrals and ongoing care, adjusting medication regimens and monitoring for complications.
- Respond to inpatient referrals and consult requests from other specialties, providing specialist opinion and co‑managing patients.
- Participate in on‑call rota, covering nights and weekends and ensuring clear handover of complex cases.
- Supervise, teach and mentor medical officers, interns, clinical officers and nursing staff, reviewing clinical decisions and supporting professional development.
- Maintain accurate medical records, contribute to audits, morbidity‑mortality reviews and quality‑improvement initiatives while complying with regulatory and ethical standards.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a recognised institution.
- Master’s degree in Internal Medicine.
- Full registration with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and a valid practising licence.
- Demonstrated competence in independent assessment and management of adult in‑patients and out‑patients, including emergency presentations.
- Strong clinical reasoning, diagnostic and decision‑making skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
- Proven ability to work effectively as both a collaborative team member and a team leader, supervising junior clinical staff.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for patient counselling, record keeping, handover and multidisciplinary discussion.
