Journalist, Afaan Oromo

About the role

The BBC Afaan Oromo team is expanding its digital‑first, video‑led operation in Nairobi. The role involves initiating, gathering and producing news, current affairs and general programming for Afaan Oromo audiences across multiple platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Research, write, shoot, assemble and edit high‑quality journalism for video, audio, radio, podcasts and digital platforms.
• Self‑shoot and edit complete news packages, handling pre‑production, studio and post‑production work for live and pre‑recorded output.
• Produce content for Afaan Oromo radio, visualised podcasts and online platforms, both live and recorded.
• Develop original story ideas, applying strong editorial judgement to deliver impartial, engaging journalism.
• Collaborate with the Assistant Editor and wider BBC teams to share content and promote best practice.

Required profile

• Significant recent experience as a journalist with strong self‑shooting and editing skills.
• Demonstrated editorial and policy judgment aligned with the BBC’s news agenda.
• Ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines while maintaining high editorial and safety standards.
• Fluency in written and spoken Afaan Oromo and English, with high‑quality writing and sub‑editing abilities.
