Journalist – Afaan Oromo (Video)

About the role

The BBC Afaan Oromo service is shifting to a story‑led, digital‑first model. The role focuses on initiating, gathering and producing news, current affairs and general programming for Afaan Oromo audiences across multiple platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Self‑shoot and edit complete news packages for broadcast and online use.
• Research, write, shoot, assemble and edit high‑quality journalism across video, audio, radio, podcasts and digital platforms.
• Produce and present content for Afaan Oromo radio, visualised podcasts and online programmes, both live and recorded.
• Exercise strong editorial judgement to develop original story ideas and deliver accurate, impartial journalism.
• Plan, prioritise and manage deadlines, resources and competing requirements while maintaining editorial and safety standards.
• Collaborate with the Assistant Editor, wider teams and other BBC departments to share content and promote best practice.
• Lead specific journalism projects and mentor colleagues, especially in video editing.

Required profile

• Significant recent experience as a journalist with strong self‑shooting and editing capabilities.
• Sound editorial and policy decision‑making aligned with the BBC’s news agenda.
• Ability to use production technology to gather material for broadcast.
• Effective planning, organising and multitasking skills, delivering consistently to deadlines.
• Fluency in written and spoken Afaan Oromo and English, with high‑standard writing and sub‑editing abilities.
• Knowledge of data‑driven content development and experience using audience analytics to optimise engagement.
