Lead Fintech Oversight & Governance

About the role

Reporting to the Group Chief Corporate & External Affairs Officer, the Lead Fintech Oversight & Governance is responsible for shaping and executing Safaricom’s regulatory strategy across its digital financial services ecosystem. The role ensures sustainable innovation, regulatory resilience and the long‑term licence to operate in a complex financial landscape. It partners with M‑Pesa, Technology, Risk, Legal and other functions to embed regulatory foresight early in product design.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and continuously refine an end‑to‑end fintech regulatory strategy aligned with commercial ambitions and evolving policy.
• Drive senior‑level engagement with the Central Bank of Kenya and other regulators to secure approvals, influence policy interpretation and manage systemic regulatory risk.
• Safeguard Safaricom’s financial services licence by ensuring compliance with prudential, consumer protection, AML/CFT and data‑governance requirements.
• Shape national and regional fintech policy through evidence‑based submissions, coalition building and structured stakeholder engagement.
• Embed regulatory scenario planning and horizon scanning into product and commercial planning to accelerate time‑to‑market while mitigating exposure.
• Provide strategic oversight and governance support to regulated subsidiaries, ensuring alignment with group standards and local execution.
